Why Understanding Creativity?

My decision to write Understanding Creativity grew from a deep curiosity about creative work. Having come late to a creative career, I was blown away with how it can heal and transform lives—not just in theory, but in real, tangible ways. I wanted to truly understand this power and how I could better utilise it to achieve my fullest potential. I wanted to learn from the wisdom and research of others and track the understanding of creativity over time.

Driven by this quest, I set out to explore creativity from every angle—delving into the insights of academics and the teachings of ancient philosophers, learning from both professors and practitioners. Understanding Creativity brings together these diverse perspectives to offer a holistic view of what creativity really is. While the book draws on science, history, and lived experience, it also acknowledges that creativity will always hold a little bit of magic—something mysterious and deeply human that can never be fully explained. It can only be understood by taking action, by embracing uncertainty, experimenting and expressing oneself fully.

Ultimately, I wrote this book to share what I discovered: that creativity is an energy that is ever-present. When the conditions are right, and it is channelled intentionally it can lead to growth, healing, and new possibilities. I also learnt that understanding creativity from multiple aspects helps us all unlock more of our own potential.
